Mason and the crew did a fantastic job taking down our tree. It was a large locust, but they gave us a fair estimate and did the job in a day. They were polite and professional the entire time and were respectful of our neighbors and our property. We could not be more grateful for the work they did and recommend them to anyone who needs a tree removed!

They took down a big oak that was partially over the house. Took it down with no issues. Very professional and skilled. Cleaned up after. Left the yard cleaner than they found it.

Mason and his team were excellent! They arrived on time, were professional and helpful! They cut down a huge basswood tree in the backyard and had permission to use part of our neighbors lawn. Our neighbor (and us) were impressed by the clean up! Highly recommend! Thanks Mason.

If I could give more than 5 stars, I would. The entire team was very quick, super accommodating, very professional and each of them went beyond for our tree cutting. They left no track marks in the grass and cleaned everything prior to leaving. I would highly recommend Down Rite Tree Service. Their team was great!!!!
Frequently Asked Questions
Permit rules can vary by city and by where the tree sits on the property. In many cases, private-yard removals are simpler, but trees in the public right-of-way (street trees/boulevard trees) are typically managed by the municipality and may require city approval. In the City of Milwaukee, the Forestry Division is responsible for managing street trees, so it's smart to verify status before work begins. Down Rite Tree Service can help you identify whether your tree is private or in the right-of-way and plan the next steps accordingly.
Tree removal pricing depends on size, height, species, condition (dead/damaged), and how difficult it is to access the tree safely. Cost also changes when the tree is near a house, garage, fence, or powerlines because removals often need to be done in controlled sections. Cleanup scope (haul-away vs. leaving wood) and add-ons like stump grinding will also affect the total. The best way to get an accurate number is a quick on-site estimate.
If a tree is dead, severely compromised, or poses a safety risk (leaning, splitting, major decay), removal is often the safest option. Trimming is usually best for reducing risk from overgrowth, removing dead limbs, improving clearance, and promoting healthier structure. If you're unsure, a professional evaluation can confirm whether targeted pruning solves the issue or if removal is the safer long-term move. Down Rite Tree Service can recommend the most cost-effective option based on risk and tree health.
Many homeowners schedule trimming during dormancy (late fall through winter) because the tree structure is easier to see and there's often less stress on many species. That said, dangerous limbs, storm damage, or clearance issues should be handled as soon as they're identified—season shouldn't delay safety work. A pro can also advise on timing for specific trees to avoid unnecessary stress or disease concerns.
Yes—tight-space removals are common, but they require a controlled plan and the right equipment to protect structures and landscaping. Pros typically remove the tree in sections, managing the drop zone and lowering pieces safely when needed. If utilities are involved, safety planning is even more important, and in some cases the utility provider may need to be contacted. Down Rite Tree Service focuses on safe removals and thorough cleanup so the area is left neat and usable.
Most full-service tree companies can haul away all debris so you're not stuck with piles of brush and logs. Homeowners sometimes choose to keep firewood, but it's important to follow Wisconsin guidance about moving firewood to prevent spreading invasive pests. Down Rite Tree Service can discuss haul-away options (or keeping wood on-site) based on what's easiest for you and best for the property.
If you want a smooth yard, easier mowing, and fewer trip hazards, stump grinding is usually worth it. Old stumps can also get in the way of landscaping, fencing, patios, and new plantings. Grinding removes the stump below grade so you can reclaim usable space without digging up the whole root system. Down Rite Tree Service can bundle stump grinding with removal for a cleaner, finished result.
Stump grinding typically goes below the surface so the area can be covered with soil/seed or integrated into landscaping. Access and nearby obstacles (fences, pavers, irrigation, utilities) influence how the work is approached and how the area is protected. A professional crew will plan for safe equipment access and manage cleanup so the site is left tidy. If you have future plans (sod, patio, planting), mention it during the estimate so the depth/finish matches your goal.
Yes—emergency service is designed for urgent hazards like fallen trees, split trunks, and hanging limbs that could drop without warning. The priority is safety: securing the area, removing immediate threats, and restoring access to driveways, sidewalks, and entries. Quick response can also reduce the chance of secondary damage to roofs, vehicles, and structures. Down Rite Tree Service can assess the hazard and recommend the safest path to a stable, clean property.
Common red flags include significant dieback, dead branches, cracking/splitting, visible decay, fungus growth, sudden leaning, or root upheaval. In Wisconsin, emerald ash borer (EAB) has been a major concern—ash trees with substantial canopy decline often become poor candidates for saving and may be better removed for safety and cost reasons. A professional evaluation can confirm risk level and whether removal or targeted trimming is the smarter move. Down Rite Tree Service can help homeowners in Greater Milwaukee make a clear, safety-first decision.
